As part of the Google Summer of Code program, participating students are paired with a mentor from participating institutions, giving them the opportunity to gain practical experience in software development and technologies. Students also have the opportunity to spend their break between semesters earning a stipend while working in fields relevant to their interests.

Google Summer Internship Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria for a summer internship at Google:

• Required languages: English
• Eligible countries: All countries of the world
• You must be at least 18 years old when registering.
• You must be enrolled in or accepted into a post-secondary academic program, including a college, university, master's program, doctoral program, bachelor's program, licensed programming school, or similar type of program, as of May 17, 2022, or have graduated from the program between December 1, 2021, and May 17, 2022.
• You must be eligible to work in the country where you will reside during the program.
• You have not been accepted as a student to GSoC two or more times.

How does the Google Summer Internship Program work?

If accepted, students spend a month immersing themselves in their organizations before beginning programming. Students are then given three months to program, adhering to deadlines agreed upon with their mentors.

Organizations

Open source projects apply to serve as mentor organizations. After being accepted, the organizations discuss possible ideas with students and then decide which proposals they would like to mentor over the summer. These organizations provide mentors to help each student through the program.

Current contributors to organizations can choose to mentor a student project. Mentors and students work together to determine appropriate stages and requirements for the summer. Interaction with mentors is an essential part of the program.
