- The New Zealand Higher Scholarships 2025 portal will open at midnight on 1 February 2025 and will close at midday on 29 February 2025.
Scholarship Coverage
The Manaki New Zealand Scholarship will provide:
- Full tuition fees.
- A living allowance (scholarship) of NZ$531 per week. This will help cover the student’s basic living expenses. If you start your online study programme in your home country, your scholarship will be adjusted to reflect the difference in living costs around the world.
- A NZ$3,000 subsistence allowance. This helps cover the costs of setting up in New Zealand. For example, you can use it to cover accommodation, textbooks or other study materials.
- Medical insurance when you are in New Zealand.
- Private tuition costs are up to NZ$1,000, to help with the cost of additional tuition during your studies if required.
- Travel to and from your home country. This is for travel from your home country at the beginning of the scholarship, and for return at the end of the scholarship.
- Travel insurance.
- Travel home during the scholarship period. Scholars studying for more than 1.6 years are entitled to travel home to visit family. We usually allow one or two trips, depending on the duration of the scholarship. However, this is subject to border settings and other restrictions.
- Managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ): This is no longer required when entering New Zealand. We will provide support to cover the costs of managed isolation and quarantine upon return to your home country, if this is mandatory and your home country government has not already covered this cost.
- Reimbursement of the cost of COVID-19 vaccinations if required by the country of study or transit, and the cost of any pre-departure COVID-19 tests. Please note: Costs will not be reimbursed to dependent family members. Scholars will be required to meet the requirements set out by national governments and/or airlines regarding the type of COVID-19 vaccination and pre-departure COVID-19 testing that is considered acceptable. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will only cover costs where a fee is incurred and a receipt is provided.
- A reintegration allowance of NZ$1,000. This helps you cover the costs of preparation when you return to your country of origin.
- Assistance with research and dissertation costs for many graduate students.
Eligibility Criteria for Manakee Scholarship in New Zealand
To qualify for the Manaki New Zealand Scholarship, a candidate must meet all of the following requirements:
- Required language: English.
- Eligible countries:
- Manaki New Zealand Scholarships are available to citizens of eligible countries . If your country is not listed, the New Zealand Government does not offer any academic scholarships to you.
- work experience:
- One year of full-time work experience (i.e. 30 hours or more per week), or
- 2 years of part-time work experience (i.e. up to 29 hours per week).
- Age Requirements: Candidate must be 18 years of age or older at the start of the scholarship.
- The candidate must contribute to the development of his country:
- The purpose of the Manaki New Zealand Scholarship is to invest in the education of citizens from developing countries, enabling them to positively impact the development of their country by sharing the new skills and knowledge gained during the scholarship. The Commission expects scholars to contribute to the social or economic development of their country for at least two years after completing their scholarship studies. The Commission only selects scholars who have lived in their home country for two years prior to applying for the scholarship. Preference in selection is given to applicants who can clearly describe in their application form how they will improve the social and economic development of their country following their scholarship.
- Residence requirements: Applicants must reside in their home country for two years before starting their studies.
- Academic and English requirements:
- As part of the application process for the Manaki New Zealand Scholarship, you will need to select your preferred institution and course of study. Scholarship applicants do not need to apply for admission to their preferred institution and course of study in order to be notified that they are a preferred candidate for a scholarship. However, scholarship applicants will need to check that they are likely to meet the minimum academic requirements and the minimum level of English language required for their course of study. Course entry requirements are set by your chosen institution, so you should check the minimum entry requirements on their website before applying for a scholarship.
- In general, to study for a postgraduate qualification, you must have at least:
- IELTS overall score 6.5 and no score less than 6.0
- TOEFL iBT score of 90 with a writing score of 21
- An overall PTE Academic score of 58 with no Communication Skills score below 50
- An overall score of 176 in the Cambridge Academic English (Advanced) test with no bands below 169.
- In general, to study for a university degree, you must have at least:
- IELTS overall score 6.0 and no score less than 5.5
- TOEFL iBT score of 80 with a writing score of 21
- An overall PTE Academic score of 50, with no score less than 42 in Communication Skills
- An overall score of 169 in the Cambridge Academic English (Advanced) test with no bands below 162.
