The Sport Performance and Elite Sports Scholarships 2026-2027 are partially funded scholarships for international students. These scholarships are available for undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Cardiff Metropolitan University. They provide a tuition fee discount of up to £5,000, as well as access to excellent facilities.

The Elite Sports Award is designed for undergraduate, graduate, and international students who excel in sports (including performance and/or coaching). The award is based on a combination of academic merit and sporting achievement, and students who meet the specified criteria are eligible to apply.

Scholarship awards are reviewed on an annual basis, and students will need to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to sport at Cardiff Met and their personal sporting development in order to continue to benefit from the scheme throughout their studies.

The Elite Sport Scholar Award provides the recipient with the following benefits:

Elite Sports Award Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Elite Sport Scholar award, the following points must be considered:

To be eligible for a scholarship, athletes must:

Fully Funded Scholarships

  • Be a student or about to start studying at Cardiff Metropolitan University (any course).
  • - Compete in a sport recognised by British Universities and Colleges (BUCS)  and contribute to the objectives of the university's BUCs.
  • Must be competing at an international level, or must perform at the highest level in their sport (e.g., national/international/professional level).
  • They are recommended by an NGB coach and/or university coach in their sport.
  • Students are expected to compete for Cardiff Met in the BUCS competition as a condition of being awarded the scholarship.
  • Students are expected to represent Cardiff Met University at open events and participate in promotional and marketing activities for the School of Sport and Health Sciences. Failure to do so may result in the loss of scholarships.
  • You must be registered as a full-time student at Cardiff Metropolitan University and have your student ID card for your food allowance or general campus allowance to be processed.
  • The award is paid in the second and third years based on successful transition to the next academic year.
  • The award is paid in the second and third years according to your athletic progress, which will be determined by the Athletic Performance Committee.
  • There will not normally be a fourth year for the award, but applicants undertaking a 4-year programme (including the Foundation Programme), as well as those studying part-time and/or postgraduate programmes, will be considered.
  • The award will not be awarded to anyone who retakes an exam for a full academic year unless they have extenuating circumstances for all retake hours. More information about extenuating circumstances can be found in  the Academic Guide .
  • You will need to reapply each year (the form will be provided for completion by the Head of Sports Performance).
  • This award is not available to students in honors colleges. Please contact your college to discuss scholarship availability.
  • You may not be able to receive an Elite Sport Scholar Award and a Postgraduate Scholarship at the same time.
  • The award package will be designed to support students in achieving their potential in their chosen sport.
  • The scholarship will be awarded by a committee comprising the Head of Sports Performance, the Student Union Sports Director, and an academic member of staff.

How to apply for the Elite Sports Award?

(2) Submit it to the Head of the Sports Performance Department along with proof of performance standards and contact details of the coach to allow for a recommendation request.

Note: You will receive an automatic notification email. If you do not receive it, please contact  scholarship@cardiffmet.ac.uk  as soon as possible to confirm receipt. You will then receive confirmation of your eligibility for the scholarship, subject to meeting the terms  and conditions .

Final confirmation of award receipt will be confirmed once the assessments have been completed and before the start of your course.
